In the UT of
A & N Islands, there is 1 District Jail and 03
Sub–Jails are functioning for safe custody of
the Prisoners sending by various Courts. Due to
Burmese national’s admission in Jail
continuously u/s 14 Foreign Act, the Jail became
overcrowded. As on 30-04-2012 there are 1108
(including 8 females) prisoners lodged in
District Jail, Prothrapur and 15 prisoners
(including 01 female) are detained in Sub-Jail,
Mayabunder. Regarding correction and treatment
alongwith safe custody of prisoners, different
training programmes is undergoing in wood &
craft, bamboo, tailoring, weaving etc. and for
physical fitness various indoor and outdoor
games were organized during the month. Yoga and
Pranayam class were also organized by the Jail
inmates during the morning hours for mental
piece of the prisoners lodged in District Jail.
The District Jail, Prothrapur has been
constructed in barrack type accommodation. At
present, there are seven barracks. Female
prisoners are kept separate from male prisoners
and they are looked after by female guarding
staff. Out of seven barracks, one barrack is
being used as Kitchen Block.
The actual capacity of Jail is
269 and 02 temporary barracks with capacity of
75 to 80 has been constructed and started
functioning inside the Jail. The present
population of the prisoners has increase to 1154
due to arrest of large number of foreign
nationals poacher’s mostly from Myanmar. To
minimize the overcrowding situation, as per the
notification dated 17-09-2012 issued by the
Assistant Secretary (Home), the Jail department
has taken over the Poacher’s camp building
situated at Prothrapur and in initial stage 102
inmates have been transferred to District Prison
(Poachers).
The existing Jail is consisting of Dispensary
block, school block, workshop and office block.
